Contemporary Art Practice

Our multi-disciplinary course focuses on developing your creative skills across technical, conceptual, contextual, personal and professional areas through individual practice and collaborative projects.

The curriculum is informed by current debates surrounding production, presentation and consumption of contemporary fine art and provides you with a unique opportunity to develop your own visual art voice.

“I write this short text to celebrate the profound achievements of a most wonderful cohort of Contemporary Art Practice Graduates. Today is Father’s Day 2020 under Lockdown, and my mind cannot help but wander/wonder...back to when I was First Year Co-ordinator for these students four years ago –we did things then that we don’t do now!

Their first project at Gray’s included a holistic one-week residential study trip living in a small village hall in remote Aberdeenshire. This was where fledgling kites were first flown and philosophical fires first kindled by the young artists, nocturnally speaking. No one could imagine then, that a pulp-fictional global pandemic would eventually become reality and coincide with these students’ final Degree Show in 2020.

As an agent of change, our course curriculum speaks to the challenges and contemporary issues that together we face today. In this way, we support the development of adaptive and responsive creative individuals who have the dynamic skills and foresight to progress confidently and intuitively into professional life.

This seems all the more pertinent in light of these CAP Graduates, and their ability to put together this Virtual Degree Show under such extreme conditions. Their determination might not be so easily described as resilience –This is Resistance. Resistance behind Enemy Lines.”
